Mossley proved too hot to handle for UniBond Premier neighbours Ashton United at Hurst Cross this afternoon to win the Willow Wood Hospice Charity Cup.
Mossley were always in the driving seat once Rhodri Giggs' 9th minute 25 yard speculative effort went in off the foot of the post. Ashton held the ball well in midfield but found the Mossley back line an impenetrable obstacle and they found few efforts to trouble James Mann in the visitors goal.
Mossley doubled the advantage on 22 minutes when Phil Denney was hauled down in the box and Chris Downey sent the home keeper the wrong way from the spot.
Ashton were unlucky to see an effort hit the far post while at the other end Downey almost scored a sensational goal when his 35 yard lob only just cleared the bar with the keeper well beaten.
As Mossley rang the changes after the break it didn't stem the goal flow as it became 3-0 in the 55th minute when Denney's excellent through ball found Chris Downey who scored well from ten yards.
Mossley wrapped up the scoring and the cup five minutes later when substitute Wes Wilkinson broke down the left and pull the ball back for Adam Morning to crash home an unstoppable volley.
Mossley almost added a fifth on more than one occasion as Ashton were forced to scramble away efforts from Denney and Paul Murphy.
